Polycom Video Collaboration Helps NHS Cumbria & Lancashire Cardiac and Stroke Network (CSNLC) Speed Treatment and Save Lives

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 17 January 2012

Polycom Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCM), the global leader in standards-based unified communications (UC), today announced that the NHS Cumbria & Lancashire Cardiac and Stroke Network ( CSNLC) is saving the lives of stroke victims by connecting patients with remote doctors in the time-critical early intervention stage of stroke using Polycom RealPresence high-definition video collaboration solutions. Polycom video solutions include mobile Practitioner carts* in each of the six Acute Trusts in Cumbria and Lancashire and personal video collaboration software* running on laptops in each of the consulting physician’s homes.

The need for an around the clock stroke service was the key driver behind the project. The combined NHS Trusts of Lancashire & Cumbria selected Polycom RealPresence video solutions as part of a new state of the art ‘telestroke’ service. Installed at the end of July 2011, the service has already positively impacted the treatment of 26 stroke patients in Cumbria and Lancashire by providing access to Thrombolysis treatment around the clock. “In addition to huge patient benefits, the service is anticipated to save Lancashire & Cumbria NHS Trusts over £8million a year,” said Kathy Blacker, Director of the CSNLC.

With Polycom video collaboration, patients get round-the-clock, on-demand, face-to-face access to expert specialist care – no matter where the patients or the consulting doctors are located. Fifteen consultant stroke physicians are on call from home covering the service out of hours and supporting clinicians in each of the eight hospitals, servicing approximately 2.2 million people across the region. Polycom video collaboration software for laptops are used by the 15 consulting stroke physicians that are on call from their homes. Each consultant has a laptop equipped with Polycom videoconferencing software, which they use to connect to any of the six hospitals via a Polycom Practitioner Cart* at the patient’s bedside. Controlling a camera remotely, the specialist can see the detailed clinical examination performed by the clinician at the bedside. This results in more effective and productive use of scarce medical expertise through video, faster treatment times and improved outcomes for patients.

After reviewing the requirements for the area and considering all options, the CSNLC selected MultiSense Communications, a Polycom Healthcare Solution Provider, to deploy Polycom video solutions, along with other key technology partners including Virgin Media and Imerja to support the service. Funding was made available by the NHS to cover the cost of the equipment which included high-speed broadband technology to remotely connect eight Polycom Practitioner carts to each of the eight hospitals.

Dr. Mark O’Donnell, Stroke Consultant at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Clinical Lead for the CSNLC said: “If a patient arrives in hospital with a stroke, outside the normal working day, a Telestroke consultation will then be commenced. The Polycom Practitioner cart contains a screen so the patient can see the consultant remotely and a camera for the consultant to view the patient. The consultant is then able to perform an examination with the help of the team in the hospital to decide whether the symptoms experienced are due to a stroke and whether Thrombolysis (the use of drugs to break up or dissolve blood clots) treatment is appropriate.”

“Thrombolysis treatment,” added Dr. O’Donnell, can only be given to patients within four hours of the onset of their stroke – so time is crucial, and Telestroke helps improve the speed of patient diagnosis. We are using Polycom video collaboration technology to take the stroke specialists to the patient, rather than moving the patient long distances, around rural areas, to where the specialists work. In an acute stroke, time is of the essence and the sooner treatments can be provided, the better.”

The World Technology Network Announces the 2011 Finalists for the World Technology Awards

The World Technology Network Announces the 2011 Finalists for the World Technology Awards

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 30, 2011

The World Technology Network (“The WTN,” http://www.wtn.net) announced today the names of the 50 corporate Finalists (in 10 categories) and 100 individual Finalists (in 20 categories) for the prestigious World Technology Awards. Presented by the WTN in association with TIME, Fortune, CNN, Science/AAAS, and Technology Review, the World Technology Awards have been called “the Oscars of the technology world” in part because of their peer-review selection process. The Finalists join the WTN membership — a roster of organizations (Corporate Members) and individuals (WTN Fellows) from over 60 countries around the world.

The World Technology Awards have been presented by the WTN since 2000, as a way to honor those in 20 different categories of science and technology and related fields doing “the innovative work of the greatest likely long-term significance.” Nominees for the 2011 World Technology Awards were selected through an intense process by the WTN Fellows (winners and finalists from previous annual Award cycles in the individual Award categories) through an intensive, global process lasting many months. Winners will be selected from among the finalists with the input of a select group of prominent Advisors and will be announced in a ceremony at the United Nations.

The Advisors for 2011 are:

Ray Kurzweil, inventor/futurist/author

Albert Teich, Director, Science and Policy Programs, American Association for the Advancement of Science/AAAS (retired, 2011)

Jason Pontin, Editor/Publisher, Technology Review

Lev Grossman, Senior Writer and book critic, TIME; co-author TIME.com blog “Techland”

The WTN is a curated membership community comprised of the world’s most innovative individuals and organizations in science, technology, and related fields. The WTN and its members – those creating the 21st century — are focused on exploring what is imminent, possible, and important in and around emerging technologies.

The winners of the World Technology Awards will be announced during a ceremony at the United Nations on the evening of October 26th at the close of the World Technology Summit, a two-day “thought leadership” conference (Oct. 25/26) held at the TIME & LIFE Building and presented by the WTN in association with TIME magazine, Fortune, CNN, Science/AAAS, Technology Review, and others. Most of the delegates to the Summit will be 2011 Award nominees, current WTN members (winners and finalist from previous Awards cycles), as well as other leaders from business, technology, and industry.

“This year we are more eager than ever to pay tribute to the talent and innovation of our individual and corporate honorees.” says James P. Clark, Founder and Chairman of the World Technology Network. “Each year, this event gains momentum and prestige making it the ultimate global platform to honor visionary contributions in the science and technology arenas.” Clark adds “The World Technology Awards program is not only a very inspiring way to identify and honor the most innovative people and organizations in the technology world, but it also is a truly disciplined way for the WTN membership to identify those who will formally join them, as WTN Fellows and Corporate Members, as part of our global community. By working to make useful connections among our members, we look forward to assisting in continuing to help create our collective future and change our world.”

About the World Technology Network

The WTN exists to “encourage serendipity” — the happy accidents of colliding ideas and new relationships that cause the biggest breakthroughs for individuals and institutions. The WTN works to accomplish its mission through global and regional events for its members and extended audience, to help make connections among them, and to examine the likely implications and possible applications of emerging technologies.
